ntfsdefrag does not yet exist.

Theoretically, it is part of ntfsprogs, and its hypothetical goal is to defrag NTFS volumes.

It is a very advanced defragmenter, the fastest you can ever find!

The file placement algorithm is the fruit of years of academic research. Unfortunately, this research is confidential, so you will not be able to find any publication about it. Luckily, the tool is GPLed, and that means that you are eligible of getting the sourcecode to view, study, modify and redistribute if you have received the binary.

Besides the dazzling speed, minimal memory requirements and auto-recovery from damaged media:

• It can defrag any file including the $MFT.
• It can rebalance directory trees.
• It can deflate unused records from $Secure.
• It can deflate unused FILE records from the $MFT.
• It can residentify small enough non-resident files.
• It can carefully instantiate holes between files that have a high potential of needing it.
• It can work while the file system is mounted!
• You will barely notice that it is running! Even “top” will claim that it is the nicest process on the system.

ntfsdefrag is a female software, and as such, she does not like us to reveal her age. Therefore, the history of ntfsdefrag is confidential.

• Heuristic search algorithms are very good candidates. (Use A-star_algorithm as a starting point. IMO RTA* is more appropriate)
